Calvin Klein broke into the clothing scene in 1968, when designing a new coat collection; borrowing $10,000 from his childhood friend to get started. The infamous Bonwit Teller, purchased $50,000 of this same line and featured it in his Fifth Avenue sample window display. However, it wasn’t until 1979 that Calvin Klein took some calculated risks with his advertising campaigns that his clothing line sky-rocketed to the top of the market and he truly became a household name, with “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins”, starring Brooke Shields. This campaign was bold, fresh and provocative, but it worked and he ran with it, building the CK empire that we know today. And though many changes have occurred within the Calvin Klein Company over the years, the most noted change is it’s diversity and variety of product lines that they now carry.
